Then and Now

Then and Now.

I am doing a then and now assignment right now..I am making a book actually..it'll be 140 pages long and half of it is due next week! It is crazy though to think about the fashions we wear now has been inspired by designers from our past. I've attached a couple examples I feel photos can show what words can only say..

The Eve of the Weekend

The Eve of the Weekend

It has been an absolutely crazy week for me Marc by Marc Jacobs Nail Bar event at Holt Renfrew, Photo shoot with Yvadney, Fashion show for Jacqueline Conoir, Fashion show for Vancouver New York 212 and now it is the weekend! It is the time of year to dress up and pretend. Halloween weekend is upon us and the pressure is on for your creativity.

I happen to be the least original person when it comes to Halloween..pretty sure I was Princess Jasmine like 5 years in a row when I was a kid. Tomorrow it is dress up time for me, celebrating my first Halloween in Vancouver and doing it right if I do say so myself..I will be on a boat party..let's just hope I don't freeze.

I never have had it in me to be something scary for Halloween, I always want to be something girlie, perhaps that's the fashion side of me..What are you being for Halloween.. Scary or Pretty? JC

If I Could Fly

If I Could Fly.

There are times, when people find themselves at a crossroads in life. Thoughts of Who we are, who we want to be, what we are doing, where we are going, what do we want seems to enter our mindsOften we feel like it is black and white. I always wonder if it actually is. Is it a yes or no answer? Do we need to know everything right this minute? Do we need to have all the answers? Are we that afraid of the unknown that we need to have a program to our life? Sometimes I think people get so caught up with what is next to come, or where they are going next, that we forget to enjoy the ride. We are always in a hurry, but we 'hurry up and wait.' Those who are my age and can honestly say they know exactly who they are and will never change, you're faking it. Having direction is good but to have every single detail of your life planned out is boring. You are allowed to be unsure sometimes, you are allowed to change your mind, your actions, hell even your career. I got my hair done today by a guy who is 35 and changed his career from a writer to a hairstylist but he is also a signed musician and is going to Poland to perform in front of 80,000 people in December. But he just woke up and decided he wanted to do what he had always thought he had an interest in..he changed his mind! I heard someone say the other day that if you spread your wings far enough, you might just fly, you just need to be willing to take the leap. It's kinda cliché but it is true, we need to be willing to take a chance in this life to get somewhere else. So I think it is important to try something that scares you, prove to the ones who doubted you wrong, those mistakes will come and rights will go but be fearless and learn from them, fall in and out love, share your stories and listen to others, leave your phone at home for a day---on purpose, travel, find out what makes you happy and peruse that even if it's not what you thought it was, take in everything that this life has to offer because in the wise words of Coco Chanel, "you live but once, you might as well be amusing." Hair for Fall

Hair for Fall.

Braids for Fall seem to be the craze. Take a look at all these designers and bloggers above who have their own version of the classic look. Emilio Pucci Fall 2011 RTW (middle top row two pictures) runway look was probably my favourite.  I decided, while I was visiting Victoria last weekend, to do my own take on it. I remember a few years ago I would look back at photos of me as a kid, and think a braid was a "young" thing to do, certainly not something a 'mature' girl like myself would do.. well thats not the case, so I hope you still got the skills you learned way back when. Maybe our good friend lauren conrad inspired us Hill's viewers to start gettin' crazy with the braided bang side braid but either way I think it's time to get back to our roots. Have fun with braids, you can do a lot of crazy styles with them. I had no idea how many styles of braiding actually exists until I looked into it. According to one website I looked at (reliable or not), they counted 89 styles for 2012..who would of ever thought there was statistics on braids? I sure didn't, but I guess someone out there with a lot of time on their hands decided to count. I bet you there is way more then 89 but what do I know, and I am definitely not going to do my own stats on this one... Another girl showed off 79 different braids, I actually liked some of them, she even gives you tutorials which is awesome. Hope you are inspired like I was. JC

Vancouver Trend Report

Vancouver Trend Report.

So this week in Vancouver was dedicated to many things for me, but in particular..The Bay. Vancouver and Toronto are the only two out of 92 locations that have launched The Room. The incredibly restored, and newly renovated downtown Vancouver location celebrated in style for this store re-birth, ending Friday with none other then Flare Magazine's Editor in Chief, Lisa Tant ( second photo row one), and The Bay's Fashion Director, Suzanne Timmins (third photo row one)for a Fall Fashion Trend Report. The Bay is no longer The Bay we once new my friends. The Room lives up to the curiosity of it's name. Literally while walking through a luxury version of Alice's Wonderland you actually tend to forget where you are, and enter into a new unparalleled experience at a store I once would quite often pass on entering. Now I can't stop going in! They have over 70 new brands including a few of my favourites Balmain, J brand, and Alexander McQueen McQ.

Wednesday I worked the event for Jeanne Beker (fourth photo row one),  and Friday I got a chance to go as press to the event instead and just enjoy the show. First off let me just congratulate the young lady miss Sarah Wong who won $1000 shopping spree..lucky girl (row one first photo). Lisa and Suzanne gave us the full Fall trend report and incase you haven't jumped on the trend-wagon yet, I have a few insider tips. I am sure 99% of you have noticed how fur is everywhere..for that 1% who hasn't, look up from your phone, and take a look around, I am sure you'll get the idea.  Well fun fact..they're saying it's a must-have for fall..I haven't decided how I feel about the fur situation yet. If you can pull it off with a great brown leather skirt and a turtle neck (*ahem-also a huge trends for fall atm),  then yay you... If you buy a massive fur vest and pair it with a ugg boots..well then lets just hope no one sees you. A while ago in the summer one of my best friends saw this gold sequence shirt I bought, and I remember her saying "oh god-I can't believe you bought that-I could never wear that-but maybe my mom would..." thanks girl you always got my back I know..but anyway.. Sequence shirts, sequence skirts, sequence sequence sequence, metallics, shiny stuff. It's in. I love love love x4 more love's the sequence skirt paired with the big baggy knit in the photo above, I plan on doing my own version of that one quite soon. Men's wear as womenswear is another biggy. We have been steeling our bf's shirts since the 1920's and it ain't stopping this Fall. Bright colours for suits will be huge for Winter RTW so pick a colour any colour..particularly red *hint *hint. Lisa said one thing and I am going to quote her; "think about colour, that's my one advice." Colour blocking and pattern is also a popular trend, taking a patterned skirt and pairing a difference patterned shirt will be seen a lot in the magazines..please be careful with this one, the last thing anyone wants to see is half neon orange and purple striped half floral and animal print outfit....just no. Fall is the season for layers, so pick your colours, find your sequence and get ready for winter folks.. the weatherman says it'll be a cold one this year. JC

Flare Magazine

Flare Magazine.

Flare Magazine is known for the latest women's high fashion trends, beauty tips, style advice, shopping guides, event news, photos, & videos and guess what...it's Canadian. Just incase you didn't know that already. Tonight The Bay is hosting a Trend Reported event where I have the fabulous opportunity to meet the lovely Lisa Tant, Editor in Chief of Flare Magazine. The November cover of Flare features the talented Kirsten Dunst and as you can see Flare has featured other countless celebrities. One thing I love about Flare is even though they touch on current fashions both nationally and internationally their main focus is Canadian content ie fashion, art, music, and current events.  Living in Vancouver I love being able to flip through the pages of a magazine and pointing out places that I actually know where they are or events I have attended. It keeps you in-the-loop in Canadian fashion culture, and believe or not, what I have learned about the Fashion Community is that we are a lot smaller then you might think. Everyone seems to know some one who knows someone that worked for that someone else that did that job...you get the idea. So what I am trying to get at is that if you start reading one of our fabulous Canadian Magazines you might actually realize that you know someone who knows someone that works for that place that was featured in a magazine. Like I said, you get the idea. Canada is catching up with the rest of the Fashion magazines out there and Flare is one major magazine leading the way. I am quite excited to meet the women behind all the stories tonight. JC

Tristee Coach

Tristee Coach.

So it has been a busy few days! I arrived back to Vancouver from Victoria on Monday Night. On Tuesday I received a phone call to assist at the Jeanne Beker event at The Bay Wednesday night. For those of you unfamiliar with Ms. Beker, she is Fashion Television's TV host and most of us have grown up watching her here in Canada. Not only does she have full backstage access to every Fashion week (living every girls dream) but she is in-fact celebrating the second year of her Clothing Line Edit-sold exclusively at The Bay.

She said one this that stood out "The only thing constant in fashion is change" ...wise words I think that we all have heard in one form or another.   I got a chance to meet with her after the show and she was so down-to-earth. Without a doubt she has stayed true to her Canadian roots and we were all humbled by her sharing a bit of her journey with the audience.

In other news..check out my new Coach Boots? New Fall/Winter favourite I think for the life out here in Vancouver. It's getting cold and particularly rainy out here in Vancouver and I was in need of a my first official pair of rain boots. I was browsing through the Coach catalogue and I stumbled upon these beauties. I ordered them asap from Edmonton at..The Bay. Bring it on rainy season. JC

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving!! I am finally taking a break from school for the long weekend. I am on Vancouver Island visiting friends and my family is visiting me from Edmonton. While driving we saw a pumpkin patch and I thought..."is there a better 'fall' photoshoot then a pumpkin patch?" my guess is, probably not.

A lot has happened in the past few days! I am proud and extremely excited to say that I found out Friday that I am now an official Intern for Holt Renfrew in the Marketing and Events department. I was one of the few selected out of many applicants for this position and I can not wait to share with you what I will being doing. My first day is next Sunday so I'll have to wait and see what's next.

I finished my first term at school and the second one is well underway! I am taking a fashion merchandising course right now and Thursday we went on a "field trip" to Robson Street..things got a little crazy and I ended up going shopping...kinda spent way too much money..I  blame my teacher, it's all her fault I decided.

So about Pumpkins...I dont know about you but the Starbucks pumpkin spice latte with the pumpkin bread is probably the best thing of the season, when it hits the shelf it's like official that Fall is here. oh wait! and pumpkin pie...Thanksgiving dinner, some turkey (for everyone but me.. I am doing the vegetarian thing, I started 2 months ago, and I am not caving this weekend. I will be passing up the Turkey in exchange for maybe a bigger slice of pumpkin pie..an acceptable alternative.) Anyways I hope everyone has a fabulous long weekend and I will be posting more photoshoots this week!

Ps. Caution to anyone who goes into Zara..you might end up spending your whole paycheck so enter at your own risk, no one warned me, hence why I got a little out of control with my sweaters. JC

Chromat

 chromat.

This brand you may have heard of already, it's called Chromat,  it is honestly one of those brands that you get excited about because it's just so frickin' different..it is how the french say: avant-garde and how I say: legit. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the brand, they are an NYC based label established in 2008. It's focus is clearly drawn from  architectural and urban design perspective of designer Becca Mccharen. In fact this lovely designer has studied architecture, which makes sense because of her structural clothing designs (just incase you missed that one). For one look that I particularly like, Chromat developed a clean and structured cage design for ones daring enough to wear it. These designs are "out there" some might say  but we don't all have to look like the fashion'er Lady Gaga to wear something a little edgier. *Ahem* for example..this lovely model Hannah, she doesn't exactly strike me as a person who needs to wear a "meat dress" after wearing this design... hopefully you agree.
